So, I wear wigs. Cue the platoon of people telling me I hate myself and my hair.

And I love wigs. Allow me to brace myself for the “you want to be White” claims.

I got my first wig when I was around 16 years old, before lace front wigs were as popular as they are now. My hair had been in locs for a while and I was nervous to even wear the wig out around people I knew. I guess I was scared of what people would think. Would they make fun of me for adorning myself with a cap of hair that did not grow from my own scalp? Weren’t wigs reserved for older people with little to no hair? Would the wig look out of place?

For a little while now, I’ve seen a rise in the number of Black girls and women embracing Wig Culture (that’s what I’m going to call it) and it is truly a sight to see. The lace front is taking over, and I think the negative stereotypes surrounding wig wearers are starting to dissipate. However, I still felt compelled to write this article.

So here’s what you can learn from my 20-inch wig.

How to stop policing Black women’s hair.

Our hair has been policed enough. It has been policed more than an intercity area…
