I Spent 8 Days in a Mental Health Facility
Not too long ago, I voluntarily checked myself into a psychiatric hospital because of mental health issues with which I had been dealing.
I don’t know if many of you know, but when that kind of thing happens, it’s kind of a big deal.
But I am doing much better now, and I’ll spare you the nitty-gritty details of the experience. I’m here to tell you about my takeaways because those are far more important.
I spent 8 days in a mental health facility. Here’s what I learned.
No really, it does. Life throws its curveballs, and those of us who are not ready for them are like a batter who isn’t paying attention.
Sometimes life hits some of us just a little too hard…or way too hard and that’s ok. It’d be impossible to knock everything life throws at us out of the park anyway.
If you find that you are overwhelmed, take time to regroup. Protect your mental health, because life is going to keep happening.
And a lot of the time, you won’t be able to control what happens. Being healthy mentally can help you to be able to weather the storms if and when they come.
Someone will understand you
Non-judgemental people are the best kinds of people. When you find someone in your life you can tell anything to, don’t let that person go. My person just happened to be a psychiatrist…and I guess I kind of let them go, but that’s not the point.
The point is good listeners are valuable. People who can look at you, hear you, and go “Yeah I’ve been there, maybe not in that particular way, but I’ve been there” — keep those people in your life in some capacity.
You may think that whatever you are dealing with may be crazy or that it even makes you crazy, but trust me, there is someone out there who will understand you and will listen. If all else fails, therapists and psychiatrists are trained and paid to listen and try to understand you.
The human condition is peculiar
Humanity is literally what ties every human being on this planet together.
Our condition is indeed peculiar, and we have our flaws, but our condition is also beautiful. And a part of the human condition is that we are all struggling with something.
Don’t shake your head any just yet either because whatever you are struggling with, you may not know you’re even struggling with it, but it has you on a leash.
A simple life is the best life
While at the hospital, I didn’t do much. I pretty much made art, ate, played some games, slept, and conversed.
There was no hectic schedule and no school to think about. And it was wonderful.
It made me realize how beautiful a simple life can be. Sometimes we humans make things too complicated.
Also, unfortunately, with how our economy is set up, living a simple life may not be as simple as it sounds. But it doesn’t hurt to try.
Schedules are Lifesavers
I feel so much better when I am on a schedule! I literally cannot stress enough that creating schedules for yourself every day is an amazing habit to have.
Whenever I finish a time slot with a task, I feel a sense of satisfaction when I can cross it off the list. Even if I didn’t do the task how I planned to do it, that feeling is golden.
It’s like setting mini goals for yourself every day.
Although being admitted into a psychiatric hospital wasn’t ideal, the takeaways I had from it were priceless. I’m able to share some insights from my experience, and I’m sure my life will be much better than it was before I entered.
