I Changed My Major to a ‘Useless’ One

And my education is taking a backseat to my mental health.

Major shaming is not uncommon in any way shape or form. You can search YouTube right now and find videos on the most “useless” majors, most likely deterring students from taking up those majors.

I am in college right now and I used to be a Zoology major, but no more! I’m a proud Fashion and Retail Studies Major.

Now, what does that mean? Where do I go from here? I’m not really sure, but I’m prepared to see where it takes me.

Now some of you may be wondering why on earth I made this huge switch. I mean, changing from Zoology to Fashion is a major switch. No pun intended. I’ll give you a simple reason why I made the switch.

It wasn’t for me. Well, it’s more complicated than that, but more or less, I found out that it wasn’t for me. I found myself dragging through my classes, not really learning anything. I thought I had a passion for animals, but that was debunked. And passion isn’t everything.

During the pandemic, I realized that life is too short — way too short. Why do I want to be stuck doing something I don’t like? I want to have a life, not struggle through my classes.

So I chose a “useless major” aka a major that I’ll enjoy, something for the artsy side of me and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Now I know that this new major is still going to require work, and I’m excited to see what that entails. But for a good portion of my life, I have stressed about school, classes, graduating. I have mentally injured myself trying to stay at the top of my game. I have pained myself about striving for veterinary school, but no more. School was my life, my main focus, but now it is taking a backseat.

My mental health is taking the wheel. We’ve got to turn things around.

Can we stop major shaming?

Can all my psychology and English majors stand up?

What about my Art, Music Majors, and Dance Majors?

Leave us alone. Don’t pester us about what we do.

If you went to college, there’s no need to be ashamed of your major. It is a marker of a season in your life. Brandish that thing.
